March 8, 2020 (Washington, DC) - Ms. Loretta Johnson, secretary/ treasurer for the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be honored on Harriet Tubman Day 2020 with the Harriet Tubman Award for Social Justice.
Johnson started her career in 1966 as a teacher’s aide in a Baltimore elementary school, where she earned $2.25 an hour and received no benefits. To improve the work situation of paraprofessionals like herself, she organized them into the Baltimore Teachers Union.
Washington, DC (February 7, 2020) - South African Arts International (SAAI) has prepared a one day exhibit call 19 Strong, that shows nineteen remarkable women who fought for the right to vote. The private exhibition will be for the guests of H.R.1242 Resilience Project reception on March 10. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees women’s c onstitutional right to vote.

Whalen, an organizer for AFSCME Council 67, is mobilizing to join her union sisters and brothers in solidarity for the Harriet Tubman Social Justice Awards at U.S. Capitol Visitors Center in commemoration of Harriet Tubman Day 2020 on March 10, a first at the nation's capitol.

March 6, 2020 (Richmond, Virginia) - Doris Crouse-Mays grew up in Rural Retreat, Virginia and became the first woman to be elected President of the Virginia AFL-CIO on August 13, 2010, the same year in which she was named a member of the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) executive council.
March 6, 2020 (Washington, DC) - Ms. Virginia Barnes, Teamsters National Black Caucus Recording Secretary & President of Local 122 will receive the Harriet Tubman Award for Social Justice. A union member for more than 30 years, Ms. Barnes is an original member of the International Teamsters Women’s Conference Planning Committee; served as a Delegate to the Change to Win Conventions in 2005 and 2007., has earned the reputation of a compassionate leader and mentor to members of Local 122.
March 5, 2020 (New York) - Suping Gong, Marketplace Facilitator Enroller for Metro Plus Health Plan at Elmhurst Hospital for over 19 years has diligently advocated for Healthcare Rights for all New Yorkers with an added focus on the immigrant community.
Suping co-lead the U.S. delegation of observers for South Africa's 2nd Presidential election, which was supported by AFSCME & others.
March 5, 2020 (Washington, DC) -Madeline McDowell Breckinridge of Kentucky joins a photo exhibition named 19 Strong in commemoration of Harriet Tubman Day 2020 & 100 years of a womens right to vote at U.S. Capitol Visitors Center [Senate side] on March 10. The exhibition is curated by the South African Arts International (SAAI).
SAAI mission is to promote multi-media events in venues all over the world; to exhibit the works of artists, artisans, musicians, scholars and professionals that is owned by others, and facilitate worldwide cultural understanding; to disseminate and exchange international art and culture; to provide scholarships, sponsor cultural events and artistic seminars.
March 5, 2020 (Richmond, Virgina) - H.R. 1242 Resilience Project is deeply honored to learned that the Commonwealth of Virginia ~ Office of the Governor is sending a delegation for Harriet Tubman Day at U.S. Capitol Visitiors Center. History tells us in the summer of 1865, Harriet Tubman returned home to Auburn, New York from where she was serving in a hospital near Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia, which overlooks the Chesapeake Bay during the Civil War.
March 5, 2020 (Washington, DC) - UNITE HERE! President Linda Martin of Local 25 (DC Hotel Workers Union) has accepted the Harriet Tubman Award for Social Justice. Ms. Martin has been a union member for over 33 years. Her career started as a line cook for GSI, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum where she eventually worked her way up to become a kitchen team lead.
Ms. Martin's North Star for UNITE HERE! Local 25 is to continue to educate, organize, and empower membership as well as non members to have a voice in the work place.
March 4, 2020 (Washington, DC) - H.R. 1242 Resilience Project, President, Don Victor Mooney, received a message from the Maryland State Police on his request for a color guard for Harriet Tubman Day. The authorities are now engaged with U.S. Capitol Police for protocols on the motorcade coming from Maryland as a lasting historic tribute to Harriet Tubman.
Mooney informed all authoriities he reached out too this morning. U.S. Army Liaison Officer for U.S. Senate, Captain Demetrius K. Mooris was appreciative for the update in a follow up message sent to Mooney.
March 4, 2020 (Washington, DC) - HR 1242 Resilience Project, President Don Victor Mooney, shared their intentions to honor women in labor with Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO, Mr. David Stephen, Political and Legislative Director. on Harriet Tubman Day.
Mooney said, "We would like to honor some DC labor leaders for The Harriet Tubman Award. This award will symbolize the spirit of freedom, justice, and equality for all.. If Harriet Tubman were alive today, she would be an organizer; fighting for social justice, a living wage, quality schools, affordable prescription drug prescriptions, quality housing, and healthcare."
Valerie King of Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) and Cynthia Collins of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 400 are confirmed to recieved the honors. Others are expected to confirm in the coming days.
March 4, 2020 (Washington, DC) - H.R. 1242 Resilience Project, President, Don Victor Mooney sent a note to authorities humbly requesting that all honors be given to Ms. Tubman (a color guard, a representative from your departments, and a warm greeting letter). He added, "Not only will your gesture be well received, but we strongly believe this patriotic commemoration will also bring a wave to new recruits for the greatest army in the world and boost the morale of our servicemen station in the United States and abroad."
